The months of planning and preparation were over and finally the Harrogate Haverah Trail Race became a reality – and what a day it was!  Nearly 300 runners entered our inaugural race and the weather was fantastic, the course in perfect condition and a truly superb race ensued:   Harrogate Harrier Andy Grant is having a great season and took home advantage and his recent win at the Wetherby 10K to good use, putting in a very hard effort to win the race in 1:04:56 – the new standard for future races.  It was a Harriers 1 – 2 – 3 with Club Captain John Young not far behind in 1:05:28 and Mark Bryant in 1:06:32.  The ladies also didn’t disappoint, latest Harriers recruit Crystal Goecker showed her class on unfamiliar ground to win in a superb time of 1:12:56 with Amanda Seims from Valley Striders second in in 1:18:17.  Emma Bruce rounded off a good day for Harrogate Harriers taking third place in 1:19:37

The winners trophy was presented to Andy Grant by Lillain Eyre, widow of the late Len Eyre and one of the greatest runners to hail from this area.  Len lived in Beckwithshaw and trained on Haverah Park, he had a superb track record and competed for Great Britain in the 1950 Empire (now Commonwealth) games, winning Gold at the 3-mile/5,000 metre event.  Lillian very kindly sponsored the the Len Eyre Trophy and it with huge pride that Harrogate Harriers are able to keep his memory alive.

The Haverah Trail Race was a tremendous success and looks set to be a calendar event for years to come.  This is testimony to a huge amount of work from club members, but especially to Harrier Dan Simmons whose brainchild it was.  Dan put in many hours of work and went to enormous lengths to ensure that the race went smoothly, from its planning stages right through to the last finisher.  So well done to all, but especially Dan – chapeau!  Finally, many thanks to our generous sponsors, we could not have put the race on without you:  Up & Running, Berwins Solicitors, Pullman Instrument, Kudos Showers, Aimee Bellwood Yoga and Achilles Heal Physiotherapy
