Almscliffe Crag Handicap

Starting at 10am from The Ken Moore/Fozard Bench on Whinney Lane just up from the Squinting Cat, the Almscliffe Crag Handicap is a timed handicap (slowest start first, fastest last) to a person standing on the hill at The Crag and back. You can go any legal way you choose (bridle paths, public rights of way, lanes) – you are not allowed to cross private property. The idea, if the handicapping works, is everybody arrives at the finish at the same time.

Alan Couldwell has kindly generated a Powerpoint to highlight a suggested route (with photos).

This event has been running for over forty years and is three races in one. The main event is against Harrogate Nova the cycling club who have to keep to the roads but do run up the hill to the turn around point. There are shields for the first runner back, for the fastest on the day and most improved. This a social event with a competitive edge. After the run we go back to The Squinting Cat for the prize giving.
