English National Cross Country Championships - Feb. 21, 2009:

Saturday 21nd February saw the last race of this seasons' cross country races. We had a great turnout for the races 10 in total - 7 senior men and 3 junior girls. It was a beautiful sunny, almost warm, day that made recent memories of skating around a frozen Yorkshires course seem very distant. The races were held on Hampstead Heath in London and involved two long circuits for the senior men around Parliament Hill - and it really is a hill ! The course is a superb cross country course offering good climbs and descents, open grass running, deep mud in places and firm running through woodland - plus of course, panormaic views over the whole of London on each circuit. Something for everyone. The races are always great events - very high standard at the sharp end and a really good atmosphere.

In the junior races Harriet Makin came 110th in the Under 15 Girls and Carolina Blane came in 78th in the Under 17s followed by Katherine Coupland in 105th - remember these are the national championships. In the seniors the men were led home, as we have been all season, by Chris Miller in 283rd position. The rest of the Harrogate senior citizenry were locked in their own private battle a little further back in the field; Dave Askew, Paul Render, Simon Baker, Jon Blane, Brian Miller followed by Mick Shakespeare. Impressive bunching, following team orders from team manager for the day John Blacker, saw us take 75th in the men's team event. Out of the medals but its a long time since we had a men's team counting in the Nationals.

After the races we were too tired to come home so had to spend the night in London rehydrating and refuelling.

All in all a very satisfactory end to the season. We've had good turnouts all season - one or two men's teams scoring in all races, from the West Yorkshires to the Nationals. Also this year we had a women's team counting in some of the West Yorkshire races - so lets hope we can build on this next season. I'll post results of the club cross country championships shortly when I've done the calculations - but the smart money is on Chris Miller retaining his title. Results

Yorkshire Vets Cross Country Championships - Feb. 14, 2009 - 10K - Knavesmire, York
The M50-59 team of Paul Stockburn (19th, 39:11), Brian Miller (33rd, 40:34), and Pat Brew (70th, 45:00) managed a respectable 8th place out of 16 teams. Dave Askew (84th, 41:13) and Tim Haas (100th, 43:03) ran in the M35-49 race; unfortunately, injury forced John Blacker to retire early. Full results here.

10 Jan 2009 - Yorkshire Cross Country Championships - Kimberworth School, Rotherham -
A cold day greeted the runners at the annual county championships. The senior mens team did very well considering their average age was, well, slightly higher than that of many of the teams against whom they were competing. The always reliable Chris Miller finished first for the team. Results

Race 4 - Thornes Park, Wakefield, 07 Dec 2008 - A sunny, but chilly day greeted the runners in this, the last race in the 2008 Complete Runners Cross Country League. Thornes Park is a challenging, hilly course, but one that most runners seem to enjoy - I know I did. The Mens team managed their best finish of the series with a 9th place finish.
