Welcome! If membership of a well-organised and successful running club appeals to you, then Harrogate Harriers could be what you’re looking for. We participate in Road Running, Fell-Running, Cross-Country and Track Athletics, but it’s not all serious competition – maybe you’re just looking for others to run with? The best way to see if we fit the bill is to come to one of our training nights, meet other runners from the local area and participate in the session. We’re always pleased to meet other runners, there is absolutely no pressure to join and rest assured you will not be expected to run any harder or longer than you wish to.
We meet on Tuesday nights at 7.00pm and on Thursday nights at 6:30pm at the Harrogate Squash Club on Plantation Road just off Otley Road.
We would recommend that your first visit should be on a Tuesday, our main training night. On arrival at the club car park, please ask any of the assembled runners to point you to a committee member or senior member who will guide you to the most suitable group to run with. To feel comfortable at the club, you should at a minimum be able to run for thirty minutes without stopping. Training usually takes place in three or four separate pace groups so as to cater for runners of all standards and our lead coach is Ian Rowbotham, an experienced and qualified fitness professional who usually provides speed/interval sessions for the Improvers Group.
Members (this term includes potential members and visiting runners) are encouraged to take personal care in warming up, stretching and warming down whenever they take part in a club run. Members are also required to wear appropriate running clothing and footwear. A member must ensure that they are medically fit and understand that they participate/enter in any club activities/events entirely at their own risk. Members agree that Harrogate Harriers shall not be liable for any accidents, injury, loss, damage or claim or expense that may arise in consequence of their participation in club activities/events. High visibility garments must be worn on club evening runs between September and March. As a club we run under the rules of the Highway Code, run on pavements whenever possible, if there is no pavement run on the right hand side of the road facing the oncoming traffic. The only exception is at sharp right hand bends where you will need to cross the road to negotiate the bend (so traffic can see you) then cross back when safe to do so. If you are running in a large group and no pavement is available the code requires you to run on the left hand side at all times.
Any member who has any doubt or concerns about their fitness, or ability to take part in any session should consult their GP, or a suitably qualified health professional before considering participation.
We organise various running and social events throughout the year and organise the popular Harrogate Town Centre 10K and Harrogate Haverah Trail Race. We participate in the Harrogate & District Summer Race League, competing against local clubs from as far afield as Richmond and Leeds. We also hold both road and off-road Club Championships based on local race events, distances range from 5 miles to half-marathon. There is always someone available to advise and support you, whether it be your first race, which running shoes to buy or how to deal with an injury problem.
We have strong links with the local community and strive to encourage young peoples’ participation in athletics and a healthy lifestyle. Our Young Athletes training groups caters for ages from school Year 5 onwards and have achieved considerable success in recent years, earning an enviable reputation in the local running community.
Once you are happy that Harrogate Harriers fit the bill, the next step is apply for membership via the club Online Membership Portal. The system is managed by our IT administrator Martyn Price, he can be reached on firstname.lastname@example.org. Note that our online system uses PayPal to collect your membership fee and this attracts a small admin charge, however it is still possible to pay via cash or cheque made payable to “Harrogate Harriers & A.C.”. The annual membership period runs from 1st April and includes full affiliation to UK Athletics. The membership fee for the 2017 – 2018 season is £40.00 or £30.00 for second-claim members already affiliated to UKA. If you join between 1st January and 31st March, the fee is reduced to £20.00, however the full fee is payable for the following membership year (e.g. 1st April onwards). The membership fee includes training sessions (except for the Young Athletes), changing and showering facilities at the clubhouse, reduced race entry fees, affiliation to UK Athletics and various discounts at Sports and Sports nutrition retailers. The Club also funds or subsidises entries for participation in events such as the local Summer Race League, Cross Country League races and team relay events. Please hand paper applications for membership (although we’d really prefer you use the online method) to any committee member on club training evenings along with the relevant payment.

The club holds a stock of running vests, T-shirts and other items at Up & Running in Harrogate, these are available at nominal cost and must be purchased via cash or cheque made payable to the club. As a general rule, you can also purchase club kit at our “Last Tuesday” social meets in the clubhouse immediately after training.
By popular demand, the Chairman has recently procured some excellent quality hoodies in our club colours and these are available for the sum of £30.00.
