Harrogate Town Centre 10K 2010:
A big thank you to everyone who
helped at the recent Harrogate Town Centre 10K. This is the biggest
event in the club calendar, this year we had an entry of 701
runners. Besides boosting our own club funds we were also able
to present this year's chosen charity - The Yorkshire Air Ambulance
- with a cheque for £1903.50.
So, well done to everyone, whether you marshalled, took entries,
gave out water or goody bags, provided the best bacon
sandwiches, recorded finishers, built the course, manned the
watches, gave a great commentary, led the runners on bikes, followed
in the back up car, worked the finish-funnel, did the results, help
tidy up afterwards or a combination of all these, THANK YOU.

Swinsty PtP and Quiz Thursday 20th
July -
An intrepid band of Harriers gathered at The Hopper Lane Inn on a
very rainy evening before embarking on a damp but invigorating PtP
over a 2.75 mile route around Swinsty. The good news is that
the rain stopped as we were running down through the woods, the bad
news is that is was a bit muddy to say the least! First home
was George Boulton, hotly pursued by mum Robyn and followed by Helen
Price in third place. Fastest time of the night was put in by
Ian Rowbotham with an impressive 16:43.
Everyone met in the pub afterwards
for food and beer, followed by a general knowledge quiz organised by
Jane Robbins. This was won by the "Power Team" of Harry
Burrell, Martyn Price and Steve Trudgeon. Rumours abound as to
the legitimacy of this victory, all I can say to that is we've
already drank the vino!
Many thanks to Wendy, Harry, Jane and
all others who helped organise. We should do this more often.

Harriers Ladies' Crop Tops - Harry has informed us that these
long-awaited items are now in stock at the Harrogate Up & Running
store, price is £14.00. Due to the warm weather I'm sure these
are going to prove popular!
On-Line Injury Advice - We have been
very fortunate to have been offered the on-line services of a
specialised sport physiotherapist via the Harriers Forum. So
if you're looking for advice on that niggle that won't go away, are
fed up with your recurring tendonitis or are simply looking for
methods of injury prevention, you have a resource where you can get
professional advice and guidance. Please visit the Harriers
Forum at the link below for further information.

Swinsty Social Run 22nd June -
There was a good turnout for the planned Social Run around Swinsty
and Fewston reservoirs, it was a lovely, sunny evening and everyone
enjoyed what turned out to be quite a hard training run. The
only downside was that we went home thirsty, it turns out that the
Timble Inn is only open from Thursday to Sunday! We live and
learn ......
Knaresborough Bed Race 12th June - Just
a reminder that we have teams in the Knaresborough Bed Race this
forthcoming Saturday (12th) and we are looking to our lads to destroy the
opposition as comprehensively as they did in 2009. They will need support, so please arm yourself with suitable refreshments
and get down to Knaresborough to yell yourself hoarse. It's
expected.

The Winning Harrogate Harriers Bed Race Team 2009
Club Subscriptions - The membership
secretary has informed that there are still a lot of outstanding
subscriptions for 2010 and if they are not paid by 1 June 2010, UK
Athletics affiliation will not be renewed for those individuals
concerned. This will mean ineligibility to compete as attached
members and is obviously not a desirable situation, so your
immediate attention would be greatly appreciated.
Spring Marathons - Lots of Harriers are
doing Spring marathons, first off was Paula Eastaugh and Graham Yare
at Blackpool, then of course we have Caroline Turner, Wendy Marks,
Helen Price, Andrew Brown, Alan Couldwell, Andrew Dobby, Ben Aston,
Chris Steele and Graham Yare at London this weekend (25th April).
At Edinburgh we will have Caroline Turner (brave girl - another!),
Graeme Kilvington, Andy Broekhuizen, Andrew Brown, Simon Watson and
Richard Teale. At Prague will be Andrew Brown and Rob Seymour.
Finally - and completing his courageous "four in a month" - Andrew
Brown will be tackling Belfast as the sole Harriers representative.
Hope I've got everyone there - if not, be sure to
drop me a line. By the way, Andrew is not necessarily doing
those four marathons in the order above. I could well have
things wrong. It's been known.
Club Weekend to Northumbria 16 - 18 July
Due to the success of last year's club weekend away, we have decided
to organise a similar event in 2010. As before, this is timed
to coincide with the Northumberland Coastal Run. The weekend is open
to all club members and all are welcome to attend, however
priority for places in the hotel will be given to those competing
in the race. Should demand exceed capacity, then we should be able
to accommodate people in alternative accommodation close by, so all
who want to join in can do so.
Details are as follows:
What's included: 2 nights bed and breakfast in the Sportsman
Inn. Transport from hotel to the race start/finish.
A broad outline of the schedule (although you are free to join in as
much or as little as you wish) would be as follows:
Friday evening (arrival): For those arriving early there are options
for a beach/coastal walk. There will also be time to relax with a
drink or two in the bar. The hotel serves meals until approximately
9.30pm if you wish to arrive in time for a meal(additional cost).
On Saturday we would plan for there to be available a range of
activities and you are free to join in as much or as little as you
wish or do your own thing. Last year we had people visiting Holy
Island, Berwick Upon Tweed, Alnwick Gardens and shopping in Alnwick.
Saturday evening: We have booked a table at a local Italian
restaurant (very reasonably priced and excellent for carb loading!)
for Saturday night. Last years meal cost approximately £10-12 per
person.
Sunday - race day (or spectating!)
Post race we will return home or join together for Sunday lunch for
those who wish to stay a little longer.
If you wish to attend, please complete the
booking form and return to the address stated with
your deposit cheque.
Do contact me (secretary@harrogate-harriers.co.uk) if you have any
questions or would like more info.

Easter Point-to-Point Race:
An intrepid and damp (but determined) group of Harriers met at
the Clubhouse on Good Friday for this annual event, won by Ben
Daggart from the Juniors Team - well done Ben! Steve Nesbitt
preserved the honour of the Seniors by narrowly coming second.
Jean Croft was first lady, well done to all!
Everyone retired to the clubhouse for hot-cross buns, cake and
presentation of Easter eggs. Thanks to Alan Couldwell and Sam
Flint-Caton for organising, the perfect way to launch the Easter
holiday. Especially the muddy bit, that was great!

FOR YOUR SAFETY
Added 09 March 2009 - Please read:
Fire Alarm – We have had a new fire alarm installed with increased detectors to bring the Club up to modern standards. However we decided that a strobe light warning for the deaf was not essential so should you bring a deaf person into the Club please warn them that the alarm has sounders only and not strobe lights.
Should the alarm sound please leave the building as quickly as possible and ensure that other members also leave the building. Only if the fire is small and you are familiar with the extinguishers should you pause to use them – do not risk your own safety.
Please contact the Fire Brigade, the alarm is not automatically connected to the Fire Brigade.
Defibrillator – For the safety of members and guests we have purchased a defibrillator that is mounted on the wall by the squash courts.
If anyone collapses and stops breathing and shows no pulse phone for an ambulance and ask someone to stand by the door to lead the paramedics to the patient. Take the defibrillator to the patient and press the green button, the defibrillator will then give spoken instructions. NB. YOU CANNOT DO THE PATIENT ANY HARM you may save a life.
