Juniors Fell Running

Exciting Christmas Tree Run up Simon’s Seat! – Saturday 8th December 2018
Meet at Stump Cross Caverns at 9.30 am. We will combine transport to travel from here in as few cars as possible to the start of the run, returning to Stump Cross Caverns Cafe afterwards for bacon butties/cake. Parents are most welcome to join the run to view the decorated Christmas Tree at the top of the hill, and in the Cafe afterwards.

Please respond via Sportlyzer or email (preferred) to with an estimate numbers of children and parents who will be joining us for the run and buns. I can let the cafe know estimate of numbers and ensure we have enough coaches present on the run.

Who is Fell Running for?
Whether you are already a fell runner, or just keen to try off road running, these sessions are for you.
Based on fun and getting out into the wild, the runs are great for someone wanting to try something sociable and a little bit different.  Cross country runners wanting to build a bit of strength are also very welcome. It’s advisable to be able to complete a park run first, but we can cater for most abilities. When and Where do we train?
Harrogate Harriers Junior fell running section meets once a month (venues below) and we run whatever the weather.  The sessions are on Thursdays and currently happen once a month:

8th November, 6:30pm-7:30pm – Birkcrag – park just along the road from Harlow Carr on Crag lane (HG3 1QB), or on the lane down towards the closed Harrogate Arms pub

13th December, 6:30pm-7:30pm – Squinting cat Pub (Lund House Green, Harrogate HG3 1QE).  This will be the final training session of the year and our first year of HH Fell Running ….. to be celebrated with Chips in the Pub afterwards.  Bonus goodies for appropriately festive clothing/headwear/jumper.  In order to estimate numbers needing chips after the run please let Helene know if you will be coming along.

Navigation for beginners/survival – Helene is also hoping to tap into the expertise of some local GB orienteers in the Spring to add to the training sessions in the New Year.

What should we bring?
Come prepared for mud, and if you own a pair of fell running studs, that is great but sturdy trail shoes or strong trainers can be worn too.
In the heat of summer, do bring a water bottle and if the weather is cold, bring gloves, hat and a jumper.  A cagoule and change of clothes for the ride home is advisable if its a wet night. In the dark you will need a torch of some kind and a head torch is ideal.

What about Medical issues?
If the runner suffers from asthma, has any medical condition we should be aware of or are have allergies to bees, nettles etc please inform the run leader before the session.  Please ensure the runner has their inhaler with them.

What if I’m not a member of Harrogate Harriers but would still like to give it a go?
If you are not a member of Harrogate Harriers, you need to join as second claim in order to be able to attend.
