22nd August - Allerthorpe Classic Triathlon - Mark Seymour has been training really hard all season and put it all to good effect this weekend, competing in his first triathlon.  I'm not at all an expert, but the timings look pretty good to me!  Well done Mark, a seriously good effort.

Sedbergh Hill Fell Race - Roy Hunter ran 14 miles (6000' of ascent) in glorious conditions in the Howgill Fells.  Lots of grass to run on with very steep ascents and descents.  He finished 81st of 169 starters and 162 finishers, so bang in the middle.

14th August - Arncliffe Fete 4/Senior Fell Race - Arncliffe is a small village tucked away in the far reaches of Wharfedale, it does have the redeeming features of incredible surroundings and once a year, a gala where it hosts a four-mile road race followed by a short but-steep fell race about an hour afterwards - just enough time to get your breath back, but not enough for your legs to recover!  Chris Miller, Roy Hunter and Martyn & Helen Price (foolishly) competed in both events and it wasn't really that bad, although everyone set off way too fast in the road race.  Chris led the Harriers home, finishing 8th in the road race and 11th in the fell race.

Up ........                                            ........ Down

.... and Around !

It was a pretty steep descent off the fell.  I think Chris Miller jumped off the top and landed somewhere near the bottom.  Apparently it's all in the technique ....

The Outlaw Ironman (Nottingham) - Almost incredibly, Graham Yare competed in this event just one week after his previous full Ironman at the UK Championships in Bolton.  Not only that, but he scored another PB in the process.  This is worthy of commendation (loud applause), well done Graham - I don't know where you found the strength!

7th August - Borrowdale Fell Race - Roy Hunter is really getting the races in this season, the Borrowdale is yet another of the notoriously tough long-distance fell events that he's been tackling of late.  The race is 17 miles with 6500 of ascent, Roy was 296th of 346 finishers in 5:13:28.  33 runners retired en-route and a further 8 were timed out at Honister Pass.

1st August - Timble Round Hill Fell - 4 brave Harriers found their way to Timble (well, it is a bit out of the way) to compete in this great little fell race (8.6m/1200ft) organised by Otley AC, first home was Roy Hunter in 1:10:08, while Jane Rowbotham kept the ladies' flag flying, coming in with 1:48:30.  I see from the race notes that there were a couple of deep bogs to tackle, so I think the "brave" title is well deserved.  Well done to all!

31st July - Adidas Thunder Run - Wendy Marks took part in this gruelling 24-hour event at Catton Park, Staffordshire as part of a mixed team of runners that came together via a Runners World forum.  In the event, Wendy's team did really well, coming second overall  in their category out of over 30 teams.  Wendy actually did 6 stints out on the 10K off-road course, covering a total of 37.2 miles within the 24 hour period, a sum of 5:21 running.  A full report on this race to follow on the new "Club Spotlight" web page that is in the works.

Northumberland Coastal Run - 13 Harriers made the trip up to the North East for what is becoming a firm fixture in the Harrogate Harriers racing calendar.  Reports indicate that conditions were perfect for racing, although the tide conditions were a little less than favourable, meaning everyone had further to paddle!  Richard Hamilton was first home in 1:34:21, Wendy Marks was first lady in 1:51:53.  Well done Wendy for organising another successful club weekend.

10th July - Wasdale Horseshoe Fell Race - Roy Hunter continues his assault on the classic ultra-long fell races, running Wasdale (21.5 miles and 9000ft of ascent) in very challenging weather conditions.  Winds up to 60mph, rain and visibility of less than 100yards made navigation very difficult, many competitors got lost or did not make the minimum time thresholds.  Roy finished 95th out of 121 in 6:30:36, a further 46 did not finish the race.

I don't think there's much I can add to that other than Well Done Roy.  That must have been a heck of a run!  Full results are here

Ripon Triathlon - Richard and Kirstie Hamilton both competed in this very popular local triathlon, just a week after representing team GB at the European Championships in Ireland.  It was a wonderful day for this sort of event and of course both did very well, Richard breaking in to the top 20 of a very competitive field.  Good effort folks!

7th July - Stirton Fell Race - Roy Hunter and Martyn, Helen & Matt Price made the journey to Stirton and the rigours of Sharp Haw to compete in this classic fell race (5.5m/1200ft), lured by the promise of magnificent views and free beer at the end.  For Helen it was her first fell race, for Matt it was his first race of any kind.  In the end, Roy Hunter was first Harrier home with Matt in hot pursuit, beating his dad by a comfortable margin.  Naylors "Pinnacle" beer was handed out at the finish to the weary (and thirsty) competitors.

4th July - Burn Valley Run - Breezy, swirling winds interspersed with sunshine and the occasional rain shower didn't make this notoriously tough half-marathon any easier.  This was the 20th Anniversary of the Burn Valley Run and the organisers pulled out all the stops to make it a success.  There were some excellent performances from the attendant Harriers, particularly in view of the busy race calendar in recent weeks; Andrew Dobby was the first Harrier home, coming 2nd in the M35 category in the process, no small achievement in this field.  Steve Trudgeon and Steve Nesbitt were 2nd/3rd Harriers home, the three of them doing well enough to lift the Mens' Team Prize (Black Sheep Ale - cheers lads!) so well done to them, we're doing well for team prizes of late!   Paula Easthaugh was first lady, followed by Helen Price and Emma Bennett.

Of particular note, the organisers identified 4 runners who competed in the inaugural Burn Valley Run in 1990.  One of these was our very own Roy Hunter and he was the recipient of a special 20th Anniversary award in recognition of his continued commitment.  Well done Roy!

Jon Johnson and John Young did pretty well at this big 10K, coming in with an excellent 12th and 14th place respectively.  It's worth mentioning (of course it is!) that they both beat ladies World Marathon Record Holder Paula Radcliffe into the bargain**.   First lady Harrier was Juliette Gregory, but also running (her first race) was Janet Seymour accompanied by husband Mark, this was just as notable an achievement - well done Janet!

12 June - Knaresborough Bed Race - Our intrepid lads put up a brave struggle, but sad to say that the Harriers team came in a very close second behind our great Bed Race rivals Ripon Runners.  As they crossed the bridge over the Nidd it looked like Ripon had a good 20ft lead, however as they entered the river our team caught up a bit of ground - it literally came down to who got the bed out of the river first and Ripon just prevailed.  Well, I suppose it's only fair that someone else gets a taste of victory ..... Harrogate Harriers have been dominant in this landmark event for over a decade and the guys did say it was a fair result.  The Harriers team comprised of Chris Miller, Ashley Brook, Rickie Wilson, John Young, Stu Johnstone and Matt Thackwray - well done for a grand effort.

Also well done to those ladies who were running in other teams (i.e. not in Harriers colours).  I saw Cathy Wright, Issy Rowe, Kirstie Hamilton, Alex Richens, Emma Bennett but I'm sure there were more - apologies if I missed you.

31 May - Austwick Amble Fell Race - Having used the previous day's outing at Melmerby as a little warm-up**, Martyn Price travelled out to Austwick for his first (ever) fell race.  This race coincided with the annual village street-market and fete, it was a very traditional British scene and culminated in the Senior Fell Race at 1.00pm.   The race covers about 8 miles on the Southern flank of Ingleborough with an ascent of 1390ft and is classified BM by the FRA, most of the climb is in the first 3 miles.  Martyn came in 70th out of 110 starters in a time of 1:11:21, so not bad for a first attempt!

** Alright, so it was a bit more than just a warm up .... my legs were a bit tired

Martyn Price, having just completed the final descent at Austwick ....

30 May - Melmerby 10K - A strong head wind on the outbound leg put paid to most peoples' PB hopes, but there was a robust presence from Harrogate.  Andrew Dobby was first home in 36:22, Anne Scaife was first lady in 46.54.

Settle Saunter - No prizes for guessing, Roy Hunter was racing again in this LDWA event, it's meant to be a 24-mile slog to the top of Ingleborough but I'm reliably informed that it's more like 27 miles!  Roy finished first in 4:27 -  Excellent effort Roy!!

02 May - Kirkby Moorside 10K - John Young trekked out to KM for this tough 10K, which is charitably described as "undulating".  John reports breezy conditions, but he obviously didn't let this get in his way as he clocked an excellent 38:15 (over a minute faster than last year), claiming 14th place into the bargain.

Malhamdale Meander - Roy Hunter thinks he might have placed first at this LDWA event, but it's hard to judge accurately as they have staggered starts.  In any event, he knocked off 23 miles/2500' ascent in 3 hours 52.  Well don Roy - was this just a warm-up for Coiners??

25 April - A very busy day on the race calendar, with Harriers competing in the London Marathon, Three Peaks Fell Race, Hawkshead 15K Trail and the first race in the Black Sheep Series, the Fountains 10K.  Does anyone have any stories to tell or PBs to inform of?

06 March - Las Vegas Red Rock Marathon/Half-Marathon.  Never one to do things by halves, Wendy Marks and Steve Marks combined a trip to Las Vegas (something to do with a Bon Jovi Concert) with a crack at this very scenic and tough race.   Here's what Wendy has to say about the race:

" .....Given that I had only eaten on 2 of the 7 days prior to the race, it was probably not the best prep for the toughest road half I have done.  The course has an elevation of 1,000ft with highest point of route at about 4,800feet, so a bit of altitude to contend with too! The first 9 miles are uphill followed by a screaming downhill last 4 - a killer on the quads!  Still, I did it in a time of 1:53:58 and came 6th lady over 40 (which was apparently the most competitive category!) and finished in the top 100! So, all in all am very pleased.  Given what other people said, the course was about 13-15 minutes slower than their PBs so given how ill I had been I am very pleased as the time is only about 15 mins off my PB. The route was amazing and the scenery stunning - I could have done with a camera to take some pics.  As I was flying downhill at the 10 mile mark with these huge red cliffs to my side and Bon Jovi blasting on my iPod I thought - "it doesn't get better than this" !

Sounds good Wendy!  It probably doesn't get much better than that.  Link to race website here

06 March - Trollers Trot 25.  Roy Hunter did very well at this event, finishing in a creditable 12th place with a time of 3:36.  He's been busy with other races too, competing in the Gran Canaria Marathon on 24th Jan (unfortunately he had to withdraw after 14 miles due to illness), on the 6th February he did the Wadsworth Trog 20 Fell Race (53rd/4:14:36) and he also braved the North Yorkshire Moors Tandem 27 miles on 20th February in an "unofficial" time of 4:43.  It was unofficial because the proper event was cancelled due to snow!  Well done Roy.

28 February - Noon Stone Fell Race.  Ben Grant competed in this stage of the English Fell Running Championships, finishing 3rd in the M60 category with a time of 1:27:24.

28 February - Snake Lane 10, Pocklington.  A swirling, cold headwind didn't lend itself to personal bests, however that's just what Emma Bennet achieved, slicing 2.5 minutes off her PB despite the conditions!  Tim Broomfield was first home for the club, while Sue Simpson was first female Harrier, with a very creditable 7th position in her category (you did pretty good too Tim!).

He was followed by Richard Hamilton (1:21:41) and John Young (1:26:00).
