December 23 - Christmas Handicap - Results - MS Excel | PDF

December 2 - Thirsk 10 Miler - It would appear that Thirsk and Sowerby Harrier's decision to move this race from its traditional June slot to December was a wise one. 609 runners took part in this year's race up from 320 in June 2006. Harrier runners increased from none in 2006 to 18 this year.

Women: Congratulations to the Harrogate Harriers women's team of Sue Dolan, Jackie Buxton, Sue Simpson and Wendy Marks who took 1st Place in the women's team division. The women's 'B' team of Helen White, Kathy Brady, Alison Griffiths and Coralin Harrison took 8th place - well done to all the ladies! First female Harrier across the line was Sue Dolan in 68:52.

August 18 - Helsinki Marathon - Graham Molyneux completed the Helsinki Marathon in 3:07:07, finishing in 119th place out of over 6800 runners, good for 15th place out of 477 in the MV45 category. April 22 - Flora London Marathon - The 27th Flora London Marathon was a great day for spectators, but most of the competitors found it a bit too warm (23 degrees) for their liking. A record 36,396 runners started the race in Blackheath. First home for the club was Ashley Brook in 3:00:03, who surely would have broken the three hour mark had he not had to stop briefly for a leg cramp around mile 22. Not far behind him was Tom Denwood who ran a PB of 3:10:33 while managing to run negative splits. Unfortunately, after months of training, injuries prevented Steve Cooper and Wendy Marks from starting - better luck to them next year! Results

Pat Brew's take on the marathon...

We took the train down Saturday morning, avoiding the disaster of last year when our car, the tube and a bus all broke down the day before the race. We managed to get to the Expo Saturday afternoon with no problems and ran into Phil Dickinson, who would be running his first marathon. Later that evening Tim Haas joined my family and me for pasta in our flat.

The next morning while waiting for the train from Waterloo East to the start I ran into George Elmes, running his first marathon. We wished each other luck and made our way to the our respective starts. I was at the green start along with the celebrity runners. I spotted Sally Gunnell, Matt Dawson, and a few other people whom I suppose are famous. My old friend Nell McAndrew was there as well, but she was too busy being interviewed by the BBC to talk to me. I also saw fellow Harrier David Harrison just before we headed to the starting pens.

The day was as hot as you've heard; I was sweating before the first mile and already looking for the first water stop. I wanted to pass halfway in about 1:36, but could only manage 1:38:24 and didn't feel great even then. The last six miles were a struggle, with many runners stopping and getting medical assistance. I went into "just-let-this-be-over" mode and ran the second half in 1:44:39, finishing in just over 3:23. My family saw me three times, but with my tunnel vision I'm afraid I didn't see or hear them. Welcome encouragement did come from Wendy Marks and her husband as well as Martin Umpleby.

Afterwards many Harriers met at the Sherlock Holmes Pub near Trafalgar Square. Sitting outside in the warm sunshine, sipping on a pint - this was more like it, I thought. Never again...until next year.
