November 2 - HellRunner Glynn Robinson reports from the Hell Up North Run in Chesire:Glynn Robinson

For those who have never heard of HellRunner, their web-site (www.hellrunner.co.uk) describes it:

“Your appointment with Hell commences 1100am! HellRunner™ is over multi-terrain and varying underfoot conditions. There will be everything from running tracks and trails to water-filled areas and plenty of steep hills. Expect to get very wet! It will be nature at its toughest. The course will be marked but do not expect to see mile or kilometre markers….that’s for those softy road running types. All you need to know is that the course will be probably more than 10 and less than 12 miles in length. Hey! With what we have in store, who’s counting?”

It includes the “Hills of Hell”, and the “Bogs of Doom” – both very apt names as it transpires.

The Hell Up North (there is a Southern one as well) is run in Delamere Forest (Cheshire). It is a very well organised event, with about 1,600 competitors this year. After you have parked your car you have a mile or so to walk to the start/baggage area. As you approach all you can hear are “hell” related songs coming over the speakers (“Bat Out of Hell”, ”Highway to Hell” etc.) – everything just to let you know what you have in store – but until you’ve done it, you can’t really comprehend.

The start is from an open field area and is intended to spread the field a little. It rapidly becomes a half mile of twisting climb followed by a steep descent in to the Forest. 1600 people going up a narrow path does not make for the fastest ascent, but at least it stops you going off too fast – this would be a mistake of epic proportions on this course.

The first couple of miles are your average off-road slog, but then it starts to get interesting. As you enter the forest you start to hear shrieks from the people in front (pain or pleasure? It is hard to tell). As you arrive at the source, you see the screams are invariably because there is a knee-high bog to run through (or attempt to leap over – you will not make it, trust me!), or a seemingly vertical hill to somehow scale whilst trying not to slip back in to the bog you just left behind.

After about 6 or 7 miles you run up and down (and up and down, and up and down) a series of hills that remind you why staying in bed on a Sunday is such a popular pass-time, and make the hills you have done up until now look like a gentle canal-side jog. By the time you have completed these you have very little left, but you start to get the feeling that you have more pain (& in a strange way pleasure) to come!

Things rather suspiciously start to get a bit wetter and steeper. Every twist and turn ends with the option of a precarious run over some dodgy looking logs (after the first fall off one of these they were best avoided) or a wade through some bog with an odour unlikely to find its way on to the perfume shelves this Xmas.

The finale was two stretches where the (cold!) water and mud came up to the waist. These are best entered by a jump into the breach and a prayer for a good landing. For some reason this stretch was where the spectators decided to congregate and offer “encouragement” (but strangely no help!). As you left the waist deep quagmire and tried to run it felt as though your legs had been replaced by those of a small flapping duck. If, like me, you are 6ft 2in and 14+ stone you quickly realise there are no ducks strong enough to carry your diet needing body any further.

You then approach the finish (or so you think).  Just as you get to what appears to be the end you get one last little hill to totally finish you off. After this a nice sprint for the line! They don’t know the distance of the race (it was 11.04m according to my Garmin) but it took me 2:12:11 (12 minute miles!). So a personal best for an 11.04m run – so pretty pleased with that!

I have never done a run where so many people fell, walked or stopped dead wondering what to do. But also laughed, screamed (with pleasure), chatted and helped each other all the way along. Everybody was smiling from start to finish. It is not clear yet how much of my running kit will survive. The shoes & socks are not looking good, but I have great hopes for the rest of it, and it will be needed for next year.

If you want to have a great laugh, get dirty as it is possible to get (and you get REALLY dirty), and find lots of mad people in one place – this is the race for you! Thoroughly recommended.
