HARRIERS VICTORIOUS!!

Ripon Road Runners 15th July - The Norman Smith Handicap

With the Team Championship safely in the bag we could afford to relax a bit, nonetheless 25 Harriers turned up at Ripon on the 15th to compete in the Handicap event.  We all piled into the Ripon Clubhouse afterwards for refreshments and the series prize-giving.  It's a bit difficult to convey the atmosphere, however I can tell you that the loudest cheers and most noise was definitely coming from the Harrogate corner, before long we had an impressive amount of trophies vying for position on our table (with the various plates and beer glasses) and it all went down very well.  I think the final words belong to to the man who made it all happen, here's what our heroic Evening League Coordinator had to say:

            Harriers gather on Hell Wath prior to the race

Q:  What do you get if you take 69 Harriers to 5 races and ask them to run a combined distance of 1015 miles?

A:  Trophies - and lots of them!

This year's Evening League was wrapped up last Thursday with the customary handicap race and prize giving in Ripon. 156 runners competed in this rough multi-terrain course with our own Gill Wareham scooping a solid 3rd place overall!  Once all runners had received their bottle of anniversary ale, we headed to the Rugby Club and the prize-giving.

The efforts that everyone has made over the course of the season really paid off, as we left with a good number of the trophies. Not only did we scoop the coveted Champions trophy, but our ladies secured second place and there were some outstanding individual performances. The full list is below and you can also see the cheesy grins of our winners courtesy of Paul Wood, the HDSRL secretary and official photographer.

*  Overall Team Champions
*  2nd Ladies Team
*  Male Champion V/40 - Steve Nesbitt
*  Male Champion V/60 - Tony Essex

*  3rd Overall in Series - Chris Miller
*  2nd Junior Athlete - Adam Couldwell

As a parting note for this season, I'd like to thank everyone for trying so hard and helping us to achieve so much. Special thanks have to go to:

-  Tony Essex for inviting me on to the committee so I could do the job
-  Martyn Price for all of his coordination and updates to the website.  Where would we be without communication ??
-  Ian Rowbotham for taking up the coaching challenge and delivering a team of runners with depth and ability

Swaledale Road Runners - 1st July 2010

Like all good races, the Evening League Team championship came right down to the wire and an impressive 37 Harriers answered the Call to Arms and turned out for the final counter in the series in Swaledale.  Some superb performances from our leading lads - particularly Matt Hallam and Chris Miller - secured the championship for Harrogate, denying Otley AC the trophy they have held for the last few years.  It was a tough, out-and-back course with a very fast finish, many thanks to Swaledale Road Runners for their slick organisation.  We all jammed into the George and Dragon pub afterwards for a celebratory drink and food, it certainly went down well with the sweet taste of victory!

A massive WELL DONE to John for all his efforts this season, I think I speak for everyone when I convey my thanks for all he has done in pulling our Summer League assault together.  To echo Tim Pocock - CAPELLO OUT, YOUNG IN!!!  Not many managers lift a major sporting prize at their first attempt.

Nidd Valley Road Runners - 17th June 2010

A whopping 50 Harriers converged on Nidd Valley for the penultimate evening league race. Such a great turn out has seen us pull a few points clear of Otley at the top of the table but its not over yet! Nidd Valley put on a challenging off-road course which nearly saw Ben Grant take an early bath with a bit of downhill acrobatics.  A good solid team performance and most of us managed to watch the French get beaten by Mexico while we enjoyed our tea!

Dragons RC - 3rd June 2010

Dragons RC hosted a well-marshalled and challenging course for the third Evening League event in the series. Once again a great turn out by the club, 36 Harriers in all participated.

The warm weather certainly made it hard going, but some good individual performances meant that the club just manages to stay Top of The Table on cumulative results against a resurgent Otley AC. Our ladies are currently sitting in second place in both the overall and the vets categories.

Leeds & Bradford Tri -20th May 2010

33 Harriers tried the all-new Temple Newsam course on an unseasonably hot evening, some excellent performances were recorded.  The cumulative results have us now sitting at the top of the table, 10 points clear of Otley. We've climbed to 2nd in the ladies team and are 2nd in the Elite 3 category.
We were a few runners short in all age groups at this race, but another strong team performance regardless.  Well done to all runners and also Leeds & Bradford Tri for organising a great event.

Ilkley Harriers - 29th April 2010

No less than 43 Harriers turned out for the first Evening League race.  The club had four finishers within the top ten and sit 2nd in the overall table.  Within other categories we are 3rd in the ladies overall, 4th in the ladies vets, 4th in the male vets, 3rd in the senior vets and are topping the table in the elite category. A great performance by the team and we're in with a real chance of some team medals this year!

Ilkley Harriers put on a very well organised event, everyone retired to the clubhouse afterwards and indulged in some serious carb-loading and rehydration therapy.  Our thanks to IH for their hospitality!
