Juniors Training

Weekly Training Sessions

All of the training sessions are supervised by qualified coaches, with the assistance of qualified coaching assistants, young leaders and volunteer parents. We also arrange for experienced athletics coaches from other Clubs to help lead some training sessions.

We need to control numbers in each of the training groups so all are by invitation from the coaches. Venues and times are made available to those invited to the various groups.

Foundation stages 1 & 2 athletics training (Coaches: Mark Bryant, Lis & David Harris)

Sprints training for older athletes (Coaches: Jon Ireland and Art McCann)

Middle distance training for older athletes (Coaches: Jo Day)

Big Kat Gym training for older athletes (Coaches: Chris Guyll & Jon Ireland)


High-jump training for older athletes (Coach: Mark Webster)

Hurdles training for older athletes (Coaches: Jon Ireland and Art McCann)


Foundation stage 2 athletics training (Coaches: Mark Bryant, Lis and David Harris, Caroline Midwood).

Sprints, speed endurance and middle distance  training at Leeds Met Carnegie stadium (Coaches: Jon Ireland, Andy Taylor and Jo Day) and possibly in Harrogate if additional coaching support is available.


Fundamentals stage sportshall training. Session 1 (typically for new starters in school years 5-6) is from 5.30 – 6.45 and Session 2 is from 6.45 – 8.00. These groups will train outdoors in the summer term. (Coaches: Simon Claridge & David Harris)

Training at Big Kat Gym for younger athletes (Coaches: Chris Guyll and Caroline Midwood)


Throws and jumps training for older athletes (Coaches: Mark Webster, Paul Wilson and Jonny Johnson)




None but younger athletes are also encouraged to take part in the 2K Harrogate Junior Parkrun held at Valley Gardens. Meet 8:45 for 9:00 start.
