Run Harrogate 10K - a major success in spite of major challenges
This years Run Harrogate 10K was set against a backdrop of several national lockdowns and a year and a half of virtual no face to face running. Add to this significant organisational and safety hurdles, Euro 2021, a major thunderstorm the day before, a huge England match and a police incident on the day. All this fell away into the background as the sun shone on the running community who threw themselves into a fantastic race full of positivity and Yorkshire happiness. The racing wasn't bad either!
Despite obvious question marks left in runners minds as events had been cancelled over and again in the previous 18 months; the race sold it's full quota of 1000 places. This made it possibly the biggest race held by the club. With over 81 clubs represented and around 60% of runners non-club affiliated it's clear that the appeal is broad. The pleasant by product of this sell out was that Harrogate Harriers could give a full donation to the race's chosen charity - the LGI Cardiac unit who had saved the life of one of the clubs members - Rob Athey. Rob ran the race and came in in a time of 1:18; remarkable given the backstory!
The race kicked off in warm sunshine with a staggered start at 10am as the elite athletes toed the line. The returning champion and eventual winner, Marcos Palacios ran an incredible race; breaking the course record in 33.29 and making light work of the notorious 'Crimple Killer'. The Female champion of 2021 was, new to Harrogate, Tam Calder who crossed the finish in 42.32 a super strong performance. The top 3 males and females were:

It could be seen what getting back to racing meant to people who had all been on their own personal journeys over the past 18months. Some in tears at the finish line overcoming personal challenges, some going slower than ever but just incredibly happy to be back racing and some, like Marcos and Tam flying!
As the organising team wind down this years effort and get back to training and racing it's important to make sure thanks goes to all those who made the race the success it was:
